An Excellent Combination Life-Safety Alarm that is a Good Choice As A Stand Alone or As Part of A Total Home Safety Alert Plan

I've installed installed two of these Kidde brand combination smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in my elder parents home. I have one in my own home as well and have found them all to be reliable and trouble free.

What attracted me to this model were its many features:

First, it has a low profile, attractive and unobtrusive design.

Second and perhaps most important, it has a voice speaking function that, in addition to the 85db alert horn, will speak out clear warnings: "FIRE, FIRE" or "DANGER: CARBON MONOXIDE". I think that this feature is a terrific addition toward modern life-safety technology. Indeed, you will likely see more voice warning devices in the near future.

We rely on these detectors to warn us, especially at night when we are sleeping. Awakening to this detector from a deep sleep helps orient you quickly by telling you the specific danger -- clearly and unmistakably. Notably, recent studies have shown that children can sleep through traditional smoke detector alarms, but will respond to voice warnings -- which this unit provides. Thus, placed in or near bedrooms this device can be a true lifesaver.

Another favorite feature is ease of installation. It was a breeze and truly could not be simpler. A screwriver is all you need. A small power drill/driver would speed the process, but is not necessary. Two screws into the ceiling or wall and you are done with the mounting bracket. The detector then just clicks in to place with a clockwise flick of the wrist. This is a do-it-yourselfer's dream. It doesn't get any easier!

Battery maintenance is easy too as all you need do is turn the detector counter-clock wise a few clicks, and down it comes. You slide open the battery cover, take out the old batteries and pop in the new. Replace the detector back in the attached ceiling bracket, give it a slight turn and in it goes with a firm click. Done! Easier than screwing in a light bulb.

Finally, the price is right! Under for a unique life-safety device that is quickly installed and easily maintained.

I have elected to use Energizer lithium batteries and replace them every 12 months -- with no problems. You may wish to change the batteries every 6 or 9 months. Duracells would also be a good choice. I personally would not use the cheaper, so called "heavy duty" batteries in a life-safety device.

I should add that I would also suggest that if you have a home with multiple levels or an apartment with several rooms, having a separate stand-alone carbon monoxide detector elsewhere in the house as part of a total home plan would be a wise investment. Kidde also makes a fine combination model that protects against Carbon Monoxide and Explosive Gas. That unit, which has a digital display, runs on electricity and has a battery back-up system. It plugs in any electric outlet and can stay in the wall socket, or it can be placed flat on a table or dresser.

I would also recommend Kidde's dedicated dual sensor photoelectric/ionization smoke detectors. These dual sensor devices provide maximum warning under fast or slow moving fire conditions. As one never knows what kind of fire could occur, these are the most versatile.

Be sure to test your alarm regularly. REMEMBER that most carbon monoxide detectors NEED TO BE REPLACED about every five to seven years (see manufacturer's guidelines). Similarly, smoke detectors have a useable life span as well. It's usually a little longer than carbon monoxide detectors -- check your manufacturer's guidelines.

Smoke+CO+talking - great for kids room
Smoke + CO + talking - all in one unit at a very good price. They say the talking feature is good for kids because the alarm may not wake them. I was please with the combination of a very loud alarm tone and voice this unit provides. It's also low profile and smart looking. It installed easily with a mounting base and the detector twist locks in. It uses 3 AA batteries that are even included.

EZ
These smoke detectors are easy to install and the talking feaure is great. They come with battaries and clear instructions. The DVD is more about the life of a fire fighter than fire safety though.

No Tabletop Stand
I ordered two of these combo CO / Smoke Detector sets, the CO detectors are supposed to come with a tabletop stand which would eliminate unnecessarily drilling holes into walls, neither of the two sets I ordered included the stand, what are these, reject sets ???

Smoke & Carbion Monoxide Detectors
Kidde Smoke and Carbon Monoxide detectors are of high quality. This name brand is sold in my local stores, however, the prices are much higher than at Amazon.com.

Hard to Know
Since I've had these 2 alarms, I've apparently not had smoke nor carbon monoxide in my home because they haven't gone off. Kinda hard to assess how they work until I have one of those problems but they both are easy to set up.

Excellent Smoke/Carbon Monoxide Alarm
This combination alarm has worked perfectly in our home. I have since replaced others with this model.

Good, but very sensitive
This alarm was easy to install and seems like a great alarm. However, it is VERY sensitive and goes off almost any time we're cooking anything - even if there's no smoke.

We have to take it out of the base everytime we are cooking on the stove or in the oven. THe hush button works, but it's only temporary - and only for about 3-5 minutes before the alarm sounds again. If the hush button stopped the alarm for maybe 20 minutes then it'd be better as you'd be done cooking by then a lot of the time.

So we've found it to be somewhat inconvenient on a day-to-day basis but if there were ever a fire in our house we really would want to have a sensitive detector to alert us ASAP. So we're keeping it due to the safety aspect.

Pleased with these long-life smoke alarms
I've had two of these Kiddie 0910 alarms installed a couple of months... and two earlier "NightHawk" models (with the same model number) for several years. They seem to be doing the job without the annoyance of annual battery changes - Recommended!

Low Maintenance Smoke Detection and Fire Protection
Question: What made you buy the Kidde 0910 10-Year Sealed Lithium Battery-Operated Smoke Alarm with Memory and Smart Hush?

Answer: I wanted to add smoke alarms to the bedrooms in my house, but didn't want to have to be climbing up and down a ladder to randomly change batteries in the alarms when they started chirping. A 10 year battery?! Even if it lasts half that time I'll be thrilled!

Easy to install with a cordless drill, this smoke alarm is activated when you put the unit to the bracket attached to the wall or ceiling. The only negative I can find about this set-up is that IF you disengage the smoke detector from the bracket, the unit is deactivated and you have an expensive hockey puck. * DON"T unscrew it from the bracket once it's installed!* If the smoke detector goes off (when you are cooking for example...) push the Smart Hush button instead of tearing it down with a broom handle as I've been prone to do with other types of smoke detectors. The reason I give it 4-stars versus 5 has to do with this potential for 'Oh no!' if you forget and unscrew it instead of using the hush.

The alarm ships with a comprehensive user's guide, a packet with two screws and mounts, the mounting bracket and smoke detector unit. Easy installation, low maintenance and a fair price. This one's worth the money!

"New" ones were manufactured over two years ago! Disappointing!
The three we just bought were over 2 years old! (February 2007) (To be strictly factual, the first one we opened was manufactured that long ago. I'm not opening up the other ones just to find out!)

I've e-mailed Kidde to find out whether that will affect the longevity (it must, although their web page explains that the end-of-life alarm is measured from when it's first powered up-- but that's probably just a clock measure rather than an effectiveness measure). I will be contacting Amazon to arrange a return! What a disappointment as this is a highly rated and regarded product (see Consumer Reports and the accolades here.

Another reason for returning is that I discovered that, starting in 2008, Kidde's warranty was extended to 7 years! This only has five! So, for sure these are going back to Amazon. Which is, of course, a hassle in repacking and mailing it, but at least Amazon is good to deal with, including returns!

The return worked well; fast processing by Amazon and crediting our account. We realized there were other issues with this detector, too. You have to figure out how to mount this--and, being battery operated, it doesn't seem as protective as an AC with battery backup combo would be (but then our smoke alarms are battery operated only so this may not matter).

We ended up settling on the Nighthawk 900-0234 model to replace our Nighthawk COPP-3. It comes with the 7-year warranty--and the one Amazon is selling was made in August 2008, and so is less than a year old!

Kidde Carbon Monoxide detector
Seems like a good product so far. I like that it has a history so you can go back and see if you had a reading anytime you were away.

We paid around for this item and 2 weeks later it was on sale at a local home improvement center for . Make sure you shop around.

Excellent price for a top rated CO detector
I purchased this detector because I live in a home with a gas furnace, gas water heater, and gas oven and I was concerned about the possibility of carbon monoxide leaks (even small ones) that could affect the health of my family. I chose this specific unit because it got great reviews from many different reviewers and because it records all CO readings instead of just sounding an alarm when a hazardous level is detected, which will let me know if I need to check my appliances before they become hazardous.

Some people have posted reviews saying that the alarm was going off constantly right after they got the detector so they returned the unit. Mine was doing the same thing so I contacted Kidde support and was advised that the detector goes through a self-test process including several simulated alarms with CO "detection in the 200-300ppm" range before it resets the display to zero and begins functioning normally. I don't know why this information isn't in the manual that comes with the detector since it would help eliminate the confusion for new owners. My detector went through the alarm process a half dozen times before it finally stopped, but it did settle down after I let it sit and make noise for about 10 minutes and it has been functioning normally ever since.

Easy to install, dual sensor and cheaper than the big box store. What more could you want?

Dual sensors for best protection
I never tested this to see if it works (i.e. burning toast, etc...) but the test feature works. I hope to never have to hear this thing go into alarm mode... but if the unfortunate need does arise, I hope this thing answers its call to action!

Inexpensive. Works. Not too many false alarms.
This is a solid little, lower end unit which sits on the ceiling and does nothing most of the time, which is just what you would like a smoke detector to do.

fine detector
A good detector that is easy to install and works well. The "Hush" button is very handy when you burn something in the oven and the alarm goes off but just push that button and it resets without going off for about 5 minutes. Very handy.

Jumpy little fellow...
Seems to work ok, except that it's over the sink and when we drain pasta it sets off the alarm... otherwise it seems alright. It scares my son when it goes off, so that's another plus, as I believe that is the desired result.

Very nice product
Nice product, easy to install seems to be working as described (at least first month or may be 6 weeks and only when I was checking the batteries, never went off as a real alarm). I bought 2 and found them to be couple bucks less expensive than similar model, that had a voice alarm, though, that I bought at Home Depot. Anyway, I can recommend it as a good buy for sure so far.

Smoke Alarm/Carbon Mono Alarm
I bought this as a replacement item and it met my expitations. It was simple to install and had more than adequate adapters to make the installation easy.

As described
Replaced Firex brand interconnected detectors with these. The packages included a new connector and all materials for installation to make the transition as easy as possible. They appear to work fine (hopefully won't have to find out if they don't) - with no false alarms.

Smoke alarm and CO detector
This was just the right product to replace my old smoke detector that was wired into the home when I bought it. I have recently bought an emergency generator and propane heater to be ready for the next ice storm or power outage. This unit will give me some additional protection from carbon monoxide as well as a battery backup, which the old unit did not have as a feature. It was easy to install in place of the old unit and appears to be functioning well.

Good product
These smoke and carbon monoxide detectors install easily and all tests indicate they work well. We have had no false alarms and when we managed to burn some bread in the oven, they proved to work quite well. We have them installed in a system and it was a simple matter of replacing the old ones with these and they worked in the system seamlessly.
